HTRI invites you to join us at the Exhibition Hall in Pacifico Yokohama for a two-day training event. The training schedule includes two courses presented in English:

  • Reboilers Short Course
  • Condensers Short Course

With limited seating available, we encourage you to register as soon as possible! Take advantage of this opportunity to discuss industry challenges and improve your understanding of HTRI software. The training will be conducted using Xchanger Suite 9.3. Select one or more of the available courses during registration.

Training Courses

Check-in begins at 8:30 AM. Courses run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily.

Course fees include arrival tea/coffee, lunches and snacks at breaks and training materials (workbooks, solutions booklets, and electronic copies of the case files). Computers with Xchanger Suite are available for use during the training event. Computers may be shared with other attendees.

Early Registration Deadline:
November 06, 2025
To qualify for the 10% early registration discount, your registration and approved credit card payment must be received and processed by our system before 11:59 PM (23:59) US Central Time on November 06, 2025.

Reboilers Short Course  (US$650)

Instructors: LiDong Huang and Salem Bouhairie

Learn the fundamentals of boiling mechanisms and how they apply to reboiler designs. This course provides an overview of selected reboiler configurations with an emphasis on recirculating thermosiphon reboilers and kettles. We will develop accurate thermosiphon and kettle models using Xist, identify design guidelines based on current research, and discuss reboiler piping specifications in Xist

Key Topics

  • Pool boiling mechanisms including nucleate boiling and film boiling
  • Intube flow boiling mechanisms for horizontal and vertical configurations
  • Boiling mixtures
  • Two-phase pressure drop

Suggested Participants

Engineers who design and evaluate reboilers

HTRI Software

This course will make use of the following HTRI software: Xchanger Suite® components  Xist® and Xvib®. All training materials are based on the current software version.

Course Credits: 6 hours (PDH/CEU)

Condensers Short Course  (US$650)

Instructors: LiDong Huang and Salem Bouhairie

Learn the fundamentals of condensation mechanisms and how they apply to condenser design! Apply guidelines to develop Xchanger Suite cases for accurate assessment of performance. This course provides a foundation for understanding the basis for thermal design of typical industrial heat exchangers.

Key Topics

  • Film condensation of pure components
  • Relationship between pressure drop and saturation temperature
  • Condensing flow regimes: Vertical units/Horizontal units, tube side and shell side
  • Specifying pure component condensers in Xist
  • Noncondensables and mixture condensation
  • Specifying mixture condensers and inerts in Xist
  • Vapor phase coefficient
  • Desuperheating and subcooling
  • Bulk-equilibrium vs. two-layer subcooling model
  • Venting inerts
  • Drainage
  • Baffle design in condensers
  • Condensation with enhanced heat transfer surfaces
  • Vacuum condenser design challenges

Suggested Participants

Engineers who design and evaluate condenser equipment

HTRI Software

This course will make use of the following HTRI software: Xchanger Suite® component Xist®. All training materials are based on the current software version.

Salem Bouhairie
Salem bouhairie

Group Lead, Research, earned his BEng, MEng, and PhD in Civil Engineering from McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. While pursuing his graduate studies, he taught Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering as an Adjunct Professor; Bouhairie also worked as a Laboratory Experimenter in open-channel hydraulics. Following his graduation, he became a Research Assistant at the university, gaining additional expertise with CFD in modeling fluid flows. He worked at Northwest Hydraulic Consultants, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he conducted physical hydraulic modeling investigations and river hydrology assessments. This experience gave him a broad-based knowledge of heat and mass transfer, thermal- hydraulic design, and computational methods. Bouhairie has delivered presentations on his work in Canada, the United States, England, and Brazil; his work has been published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics and the Journal of Hydro-environment Research.

LiDong Huang
Lidong huang

Principal Engineer, Experimental Research, holds a BS from Shanghai Maritime University and an MS from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai, China. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston, Houston, Texas, USA, where he studied and developed methods for predicting subcooled flow boiling, film boiling, and critical heat flux. Before joining HTRI, Huang worked as an instructor and thermal engineer in the Department of Marine Engineering at Shanghai Maritime University. Since joining HTRI, he has focused primarily on boiling and two-phase flow phenomena but also has done some experimental and analytical work on plate heat exchangers, organic fouling, and single-phase mixed convection. Huang has taught numerous courses for HTRI. He is a member of ASME and a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas.
