Abstract:

Because many chemical processes, petroleum refining practices, and even food processing methods involve slurries, we have examined the existing literature for velocity, pressure drop, and heat transfer data applicable to exchangers that heat or cool solid-liquid slurries. Prior to this report, HTRI had not recommended methods for slurry flow. This study highlights the importance of flow regime in

  • prediction of operable design velocity
  • proper selection of equipment
  • accurate pressure drop prediction

Prediction of pressure drop requires knowledge of slurry physical properties, while that of heat transfer uses pure fluid properties. The report includes recommended methods and a guide to selecting appropriate equipment.
