Abstract:

HTRI general heat exchanger design methods require specification of two-phase flow correlations in boiling, condensing, and no-phase-change systems; in vertical or horizontal orientation; and for shellside or tubeside flow. Published references on these subjects are scattered and not systematic. Thus, this report is intended to summarize the basic principles of two-phase flow as applied to heat exchanger design and to define certain standard terms, nomenclature, and practices. In addition, some newly developed concepts involving tubeside and shellside flow regime prediction are discussed and new generalized flow regime maps are proposed. Suggested procedures are given for a first estimate calculation of two-phase heat transfer and pressure drop, and references are made to HTRI reports covering specific equipment for more detailed calculations.
