S-SS-3-26 Crossflow Mixed Convection Heat Transfer for Horizontal Tube Banks

This report presents a new crossflow mixed convection correlation based on heat transfer measurements for liquids in vertical flow over ideal horizontal plain and low-finned tube banks. It also includes updates to crossflow forced convection methods. When natural convection penalizes heat transfer, the proposed methods lower the predicted heat transfer coefficient to as much as half the current value. When natural convection enhances heat transfer, the methods may raise the coefficient to as much as twice the current value or more. Further study of mixed convection regimes is required before the methods are incorporated in Xchanger Suite software.
