PHE-5 Port Pressure Drop and Flow Distribution in Plate Heat Exchangers

This report discusses port flow maldistribution in plate heat exchangers and analyzes HTRI port pressure distribution data for UFX-26 plates. A theoretical model supported by experimental data is introduced; this model predicts port pressure and flow distribution in plate heat exchangers for U and Z arrangements. The model’s numerical predictions are compared with HTRI port pressure distribution data to determine inlet and outlet overall momentum correction factors. The report also defines and discusses parameters affecting port flow distribution and provides guidelines for minimizing port flow maldistribution.
