Abstract:

As sensitivity to environmental issues grows, reflux condensers are becoming essential elements of process plants because they can be used to remove volatile hydrocarbons from gas streams discharging to the atmosphere. Designing reflux condensers requires special temperature profile calculations, which are especially difficult for multicomponent reflux condensers because of counterflow and non-equilibrium conditions. HTRI has reviewed four possible approaches to determine the method that combines the necessary rigor with ease of use, both of which are lacking in the previously recommended method. A new method based on a combination of an integral and a differential condensation profile predicts HTRI data well and provides a relatively simple and accurate procedure that can be implemented in Xist for design of these units.
