Abstract:

A clear understanding of the conditions leading to two-phase flow instabilities and the capability to predict them is essential for appropriate design of thermosiphon reboilers.

This report contains an analysis of the instability problem based on Bouré's density effect model. Comparison with available experimental data shows adequate prediction of oscillation threshold. A parametric response study has shown good agreement with experimentally observed effects of different parameters and has allowed a better understanding of the stability criteria for thermosiphon reboiler design.
