Abstract:

Based on data from the Multipurpose Boiling Unit (MBU), HTRI has developed a stratified flow boiling model and boiling heat transfer methods in the transition regions from wet-wall to complete film boiling or dry-wall mist flow in horizontal tubes. This report

  • describes tube wall dryout
  • discusses the generation of critical heat flux correlations for top and bottom walls
  • presents a new flow film boiling correlation for pure components
  • recommends a dry-wall calculation algorithm for horizontal intube flow boiling

The new model and methods successfully predict HTRI horizontal intube flow boiling data from the MBU and greatly increase accuracy in predicting heat transfer performance in the stratified and transition boiling regions.
