Abstract:

HTRI Xchanger Suite 6 uses a Circulation Boiling Model (CBM) for kettles. HTRI recently reviewed the flow convergence algorithm, documented the modification of the heat release curve required for boiling mixtures in kettles, and assessed the assumptions and correlations used to determine the pressure drop in kettle exchangers. The CBM does not account for bundle bypass, which high feed flow rates may produce. Modifying the CBM to include an optional bypass model would allow cases to converge to circulation ratios less than one. Although the assumed driving static pressure for kettles agrees with independent measurements taken by multiple researchers, void fraction predictions of Xist do not match experimental measurements. Concurrent evaluation of the kettle void fraction, pressure drop, and heat transfer calculations should continue.
