Update on HTRI Training - USA
More than 45 participants attended HTRI Training - USA at Pebble Creek Country Club in College Station, Texas on February 8 - 12, 2010. The week’s offerings included the Introduction to the Design of Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers short course (prepared and presented by Ian Gibbard), as well as a variety of one-day workshops, including Xist, Xace, Advanced Xist, and Vibration Analysis.
HTRI training is a valuable complement to HTRI membership, helping you make effective use of the tools available to you. Check Upcoming Events for a training event near you, and register today! We look forward to seeing you soon.
Müller-Steinhagen receives Kern Award
HTRI congratulates Dr. Hans Müller-Steinhagen on receiving the AIChE 2008 Donald Q. Kern Award for his work in
- fouling in heat exchangers
- compact, plate, and fluid bed heat exchangers
- multiphase heat transfer
- solar energy collection and heat storage
- fuel cells and computational fluid dynamics
His award lecture, given at the AIChE Annual Meeting in November 2009, was entitled Heat Transfer Fouling: 50 Years after the Kern & Seaton Model.
The Donald Q. Kern Award is bestowed annually in recognition of expertise in a given field of heat transfer, transport phenomena, and energy processes, with special emphasis given to contributions with significant practical applications.
Serving as director of the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics of the German Aerospace Centre and the director of the Institute for Thermodynamics and Thermal Engineering of the University of Stuttgart, Müller-Steinhagen is the author of more than 500 books and articles. He was awarded the 1992 and 1993 TMS Bauxite Processing Awards, the 1994 Light Metals Award, the Beilby Medal and Prize, the UK Heat Transfer Society Mike Akrill Trophy, and the Best Paper 2000 in the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, President of EUROTHERM and the IMDEA Board of Trustees, member of the Executive Boards of EUREC and ICHMT, member of the Innovations Council and of the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, and the Advisory Boards of PSI and ZSW.
As a guest at the 2008 HTRI Annual Meeting of Stockholders, Müller-Steinhagen spoke about Smart Surfaces for Improved Heat Exchangers and Solar Thermal Power Plants - On the Way to Commercial Market Introduction.
Alliance with Honeywell to result in new products and services
In September 2009, Heat Transfer Research, Inc., and Honeywell® entered into a strategic alliance, bringing added value to members and customers of both companies.
In early 2010, Honeywell’s UniSim® heat exchanger software will be available for licensing directly from HTRI, providing companies around the world with a single source for both the industry leading HTRI Xchanger Suite® and Honeywell’s heat exchanger modules. Additionally, Honeywell is providing related technology to aid in the development of future products and services.
This alliance is a very positive development for HTRI and its members. With access to independently conducted research and software development dating back to 1971, we will be able to refine our existing efforts, accelerate development of new research areas, and provide members with more software options.
Among these options is a translation tool that will allow Xchanger Suite to open and convert cases from Honeywell’s UniSim heat exchanger modules as well as other thermal software products. This valuable tool builds on Honeywell’s case portability with process simulation products from Aspen Technology. The translation tool is in development and will be available to HTRI members in the first quarter of 2010.
HTRI and Honeywell also will work together to create a closer integration between Xchanger Suite and Honeywell’s UniSim® Design process simulator. This collaboration will provide best-in-class thermal simulation options to process designers and manufacturers.
We will have further news and announcements in the coming months about products and licensing options. For more information about the alliance and our near-term plans, please see the Honeywell Alliance Frequently Asked Questions page or contact Ray Toler, Manager, Marketing, at 979.690.5050.
