Designing effective heat exchangers requires understanding flow and heat transfer characteristics of fluids. Heat exchangers frequently use non-Newtonian fluids, and HTRI has conducted research to increase our knowledge of their behavior.

In this webinar, we discuss the basics of non-Newtonian fluids and using power law to model the behavior. The timeline of non-Newtonian fluids research at HTRI is showcased, with highlights of research projects such as the experiments in 2019 using ketchup as a working fluid. HTRI used the collected experimental data to develop correlations for heat transfer and pressure drop, as well as to construct and validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. We also tested the HTRI correlation for a pseudo-plastic fluid 0.2% wt. Carbopol, using experimental data from literature. These data are then compared with HTRI correlations, using CFD. This study enhanced our understanding of non-Newtonian fluids, providing a clear path forward for additional research.

Registration Deadline: May 06, 2024

Schedule

This online course consists of recorded lectures available on demand and live Q&A sessions. Your registration gives you access to course content during the four-day access period. All course instruction will be provided in pre-recorded videos available to view on demand. The live Q&A sessions are available to you for clarification on topics and answers to questions that you may have regarding the course.

Registrants will receive an email containing instructions on how to access the online course and live Q&A sessions. The email will be distributed at least (2) business days prior to the start of the four-day access period. Instructor-led Q&A sessions are hosted in Microsoft® Teams®. Xchanger Suite® examples are used to complete case study exercises. If a registrant does not have access to HTRI software through a member company, HTRI will provide a temporary license for use during the event. All training materials are based on the current software version.

Description

This workshop is devoted to the shell-and-tube exchanger geometries handled only by Xist®. The course focuses on the extensive options available in Xist and how you can use these methods effectively to solve several example problems. You will leave the class knowing how to take full advantage of the features this robust tool offers.

Key Topics

  • Overview of Xist interface and the benefits of HTRI methods
  • Process specification rules for rating, simulation, and design modes
  • Guidelines for specifying fluid properties
  • Description of Xist geometry input parameters and their defaults
  • Interpretation of Xist outputs for validation of unit performance

Suggested Participants

Designers of shell-and-tube heat exchangers and process engineers who evaluate their performance

HTRI Software

This course will make use of the following HTRI software: Xchanger Suite® component Xist®

Course Credits: 6 hours (PDH/CEU)

Course Fee: US$450
